My classmate at Parker School, Jonah Roll has made available two prints by his father (My photography teacher at Parker School) former Star Bulletin Chief Photographer Warren Roll. Proceeds from these remastered 16x16 metal prints will go towards Parker School Scholarships.
Both images were taken in 1968, the first image is the summit of Mauna Kea with only one telescope (The University of Hawaii 0.6m) and the second print is of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel shortly after it opened.
I hope to see you at the Harbor Gallery in Kawaihae, Friday August 16th 2019 from 6pm to 8pm! Come talk story!
We just finished a two day shoot at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island of Hawaii! We photographed 6 hotel rooms and captured some daytime and evening shots of the brand new electric boats that replaced the gas powered ones! Here is sample of some of the images we captured.
Mahalo Hilton Waikoloa!
This is such an amazing film about an amazing team of some of the brightest individuals ever assembled to create the W.M. Keck Observatory here on the Big Island of Hawaii.
W.M. Keck Observatory writes: “W. M. Keck Observatory takes a journey through time, honoring the past, celebrating the present, and inspiring the future. This film highlights the vision, mission, and evolution of the most scientifically impactful optical/infrared twin telescopes on Earth, as told through the lenses of the people who are part of the Observatory’s history and experienced the trials, tribulations, and successes of building what was once called ‘The Impossible Telescope.’”
I am so proud to have met so many of these amazing people and had the opportunity to work with them capturing images for the Observatory! Mahalo Andrea Ghez, Andrew Cooper, Ron Laub, Taft Armandroff, Barbara Schaefer, Hilton A. Lews, Debbie Goodwin, Joan Cambell, Cindy Chong, Steve Jefferson, Leslie Kissner, Gregory Wirth, Pete Tucker, Sandra Faber, Gavin Sebastian, Pieter van Dokkum, Noelani Nitz, Eric Appleby, Carol and Clive Davies, Joseph Gargiulo, Margaret Cookie Holley, Truman Wold.

I got back to Honolulu just in time for the first big South Swell, Waikiki Beach was going off at around 6 to 10 feet. Although the swell was inconsistent some nice sets rolled through and it was fun to fly the Mavic Pro 2 and get some shots of the surf below. You can’t beat the backdrop of the Royal Hawaiian!
